The Flowerhorn in the video is a Flowerhorn & Red Devil Cichlid Hybrid; he is about 1.5 years old now & has grown over 8 inches in length. He has great personality, however he was rejected at the fish store for not having a Nuchal Hump or Kok on the head. Flowerhorn's with Nuchal hump are priced more, none the less I brought this fish when he was a Juvenile & Raised him along with Red Devil Cichlids, he was a Tank Boss then, now he has his own tank.
The Aquarium you see in the video is 50 gallon, I used sand for tank bottom as it helps settle debris & gives an additional buffer between water changes.
For a Flowerhorn aquarium sand is the best option than small pebbles or gravel as Flowerhorns can swallow small pebbles & this would lead to stomach related issues, whereas sand can easily pass through their digestive system.
Plants or any lighter decoration will be moved or trashed in a Flowerhorn Cichlid aquarium; hence, only decoration would be heavy rocks without sharp edges like you see in the video. These fish are powerful & very active, you don't want them to run into a sharp decorative object.
Apart from the short bodied flowerhorn most types of flowerhorn easily reach & pass the size of 12 inches. This means they need a bigger aquarium, hence start big. I can only house my flowerhorn in this aquarium for another 2 to 3 months at the most, after which I might have to re-home this flowerhorn to a bigger 75 gallon aquarium.
I feed protein based flowerhorn cichlid food as staple & at least live or frozen food once every 3 days. This includes dry fish & shrimps.
