Serpae Tetra also called Red Minor Tetra are small fish native to Amazon river drainage, ponds, lakes & small streams in South America. The Natural habitat of these fish are usually Black waters, this makes them a prime option to keep in a Black water aquarium at home. Red Minor Tetra grows only about 2 inches in length & are best kept in a school of 8 or more, this avoids them fin nipping of other tank mates. This fish have known to live over 7 years in home aquarium if provided with right conditions.
Male Serpae tetra are smaller than females, the female red minor tetra has more rounded body & best way to differentiate them is through swim bladder which in Female fish appears to be over the silver line due to its shape.

Setting up a Aquarium for Red minor Tetra-
You would need a aquarium which is 20 gallon for bigger, lot of live plants, driftwood & rocks. To get the pH level less than 7, I use Almond leaf extract & the tannin's released by the driftwood also helps. Also make sure the aquarium has enough open space for them to swim. These fish would chase each other & usually there isn't any damage, this act is called pecking order wherein they are establishing a hierarchy, you would see this behavior in lot of schooling fish.

Tank mates - I have kept these fish with tiger barbs, rosy barbs, Pleco fish, Gourami fish, Sword tail without any problem. In this video they are housed with Neon Tetra's. I would also suggest to monitor these fish as they may go after smaller fish or new tank mates, also fish with long fins.

Aquarium Care -
Tank size - 20 gallon or bigger
Aquarium Filtration - HOB or Sponge filter with minimal water movement in the aquarium.
Water Parameters -
I have the pH level at 6.5, the pH range for these fish is 5 to 7.
Temperature range - 72-82°F (22-27°C )
Water Hardness - they prefer soft water less than 60 ppm

Food- I feed Tetra Bits, Mini Pellets, Freeze Dried Worms, Live & frozen food like Blood worms, Water Fleas etc.
