This Video will help you make your own Clay Pot Filter. Aquarium Filters are Vital for Aquatic Life in the tank, its really Important that Filters are effective in Filtering unwanted substance in the water & also harvesting Beneficial bacteria inside it which breaks up the bio-load in the tank. Filter also needs to create the right amount of water movement depending on the type of Fish in the Tank. Generally the Filters Like sponge filter or DIY filters fail to get along with the decoration in the Tank. The clay pot Filter in the Video is simple & effective, it usually fits well in any tank decoration, I have been using it in my small tanks for sometime now. This DIY filter works well in Nursery Tank & is safe for the Fry. I used it in a Molly Breeding tank as well. This DIY Clay pot Filter works pretty much the same way as sponge filter or other DIY filter with biological media inside it. This Filter has 3 layers of Filtration, Firstly the water enters the Pot bottom due to suction created by the bubbles, The air bubbles push the water into the bed of bio-foam, fine gravel & rocks. Since the Clay pot also has Lucky Bamboo in it at the top, the roots of lucky bamboo extract Nitrates from the water, Lucky Bamboo grows & the water gets cleaner. Pothos plant is also an option in the Clay Pot. For this set-up I chose Lucky Bamboo. The Bio-Sponge the gravel & the chipped rocks harvest Beneficial bacteria which cleans the Bio-Load in the tank. Since the Bubbles from the filter surface, there is water movement which helps exchange of Gas from the tank to air. Maintenance is easy, every few months just remove the plants, rocks, gravel & sponge, rinse it in warm water & put them back the way it was.
Important things to remember in case you are making this filter:
1. The Clay Pot has to be rinsed & soaked for at least a week to lose any unwanted substance in it.
2. There should be a Place under the Clay Pot Filter for water to enter.
3. 25% water change on weekly or bi-weekly basis is recommended.
4. The speed of the Bubbler should be controlled to get the right suction pressure, the water movement on the surface should be right for the type of fish in the tank. Example: Betta fish cannot withstand too much water movement.
5. The Lucky bamboo has worked well for me to control Nitrates when I put it in a Hang-on Filter. The bio-load from the fish I chose to use this Filter has very less Bio-load.
So Please research & know your Tanks Bio-Load before making any DIY Filter. If you are not sure you can always ask question's & I will try my best to answer.
